WINTERFEST CELEBRATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTY! Sevier County always kicks off the Winter Season in a big way. Each city has their own unique celebration to get the entire family excited about the festivities and magic of winter time! The Winterfest Celebrations begin in Sevierville. Sevierville’s Winterfest Kickoff takes place from 3 to 8 pm on November 6th in downtown Sevierville. Enjoy plenty for the kids to do; face painting, arts & crafts, balloon animals, inflatables, and games. There’s tons of food and plenty of stage acts. Enjoy a mascot dance off, performances from local dance teams, lumberjack competitions, and music. The event concludes with a spectacular firework display!   The 28th Annual Pigeon Forge Winterfest Kickoff will be held on  November 7th at Patriot Park! Independence day is fast approaching. This holiday, which began when the thirteen original colonies claimed their independence from England, has evolved into a celebration of barbecues and fireworks with friends and families. Sevier County, TN sure knows how to celebrate in a big way. Check out this posting for several ways to ensure the entire family has a blast this 4th!  The City of Gatlinburg hosts the very 1st Independence Parade in the Nation. Spectators begin setting up their spots early on the 3rd to ensure that they don't miss anything in the parade which begins at midnight. The 42nd Independence day parade will salute Firefighters, First Responders, and Law Enforcement for their heroic efforts in the November 28, 2017 wildfire disaster. It originally started as a religious feast, but is now a holiday full of celebration and tradition around the world. It's a brand new year! A time to make resolutions, a time for a fresh start, a time to reflect and move forward.  New Year's Celebrations...When Did It Begin?      The tradition of celebrating the start of each new year has been occurring for at least the past four millenniums. Our celebrations start on December 31 and carry into January 1, but that has not always been the norm. The earliest New Year's Celebrations have been recorded to about 4,000 years ago in ancient Babylon. The Babylonians celebrated the new year on the day of the first full moon following the vernal equinox. This day (occurring in late March) is significant, because the amount of sunlight and darkness were equal. The occasion was marked with a large religious festival called Akitu.
