Local Favorite - The Donut Friar

Tourist destinations are packed full of restaurants; most of them being the well known chain restaurants that can be dined in all over the country.  However, every city has the smaller restaurants that are usually out of the hustle and bustle of the city life.  These restaurants are  local favorites and mom and pop establishments that don't make it into the guidebooks and vacation brochures.  Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, and the other surrounding areas of the Smoky Mountains have several well-kept secrets that the locals love.

These establishments in the Smoky Mountains are often a great place to go and learn about the local culture, as well as eat some of the best local food.  Most of the establishments have more reasonable prices than the chain restaurants in town.  The service is above and beyond in these family owned establishments and the food is worth coming back for over and over again.

Because there are so many local favorites we will pick a featured restaurant each month and share it with our readers.  This months featured restaurant is The Donut Friar.

The Donut Friar is located in The Village on the parkway in Gatlinburg, TN.  The Donut Friar has been in business for over 40 years and still continues to create magnificent donuts and pastries.  This small breakfast restaurant makes donuts, pastries, and cinnamon bread fresh every day.  The tiny shop, that gives off an alluring aroma of fresh baked sweet breads, is sure to greet you before you even walk through the door.  The main floor has enough seating for about 4 customers and the upstairs loft area has several tables and chairs for more patrons.  The display counter is packed full of pastries choices ranging from traditional donuts to cinnamon bread and fancier pastries.  The smell of fresh coffee also fills the shop. The Donut Friar is not only known for the best donuts but also offers the southern Tennessee integrity and hospitality that Gatlinburg is known for.

The Donut Friar is open at 5:00 am and is ready to serve when you are ready to eat.  The next time you are visiting Gatlinburg, don't miss out on these delicious donuts.

Stay tuned for next month's local favorite.
