It's summer time! Are the kids driving you crazy? Need a quick getaway? Check out this blog for some family friendly, weekend getaways close to East TN. 


Chatanooga, TN:

Kids and even grownups would love to stay in one of the restored train cars at the Chatanooga Choo Choo Hotel. For even more fun, kids can take a ride on the Chatanooga Choo Choo Trolley. Enjoy walking the gardens or taking a dip in the pool. They have on site restaurants offering a breakfast buffet and delicious quick meals. You wouldn't even have to leave the property! Abingdon, VA:

Want to immerse your kids in history? Downtown Abingdon is a Virginia Historic Landmark. Visit Abingdon Muster Grounds is an epicenter for Colonial Backcountry History from the American Revolutionary Period. Visit the Old Mollie Steam Engine on the Virginia Creeper trail. This same type of engine pulled the Virginia Creeper railroad for many years. Don't miss the Sinking Springs Cemetery and Historic Cummings Cabin. Some of the tombstones date back to 1776. 

Asheville, NC:

Looking to expose your kids to the Arts. Look no further than Asheville. From the architecture to the local artists showcasing their talents, your family is sure to find inspiration. Check out downtown's Pritchard Park on Friday Nights and participate in a drum circle. No trip is complete without a visit to the Biltmore Estates. The kids will think they are part of a fairy tale as they reenact parts of the Serafina series. 

Dahlonega, GA:

History, Wine, Art, Culture, Adventure, and Nature...What more could you ask for? This is the site of the first major US gold rush and nestled right in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Spend the day wading through the river panning for gold, hiking to a waterfall, stroll through art galleries, and experience historic tours and attractions. While there, take the kids to the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve. Home to over 100 animals...It's a magical place to spend the day with the family. 

Greenville, SC:

Greenville is one of the most friendly family cities you will find. There's a wide variety of activities sure to please everyone in the family. Check out the zoo, 7th Inning Splash Waterpark, Cedar Falls Park, the Children's Museum, Chimney Rock and more. There's no way you could do everything they have to offer in just one weekend. 

Helen, GA:

Can't afford a vacation to Germany? Take the family to Helen, GA! This mountain town in Northeast, GA is known for its vineyards and Bavarian style buildings. There's no shortage of quaint mini golf locations. For the more adventurous there is ziplining, white water rafting, kayaking, horseback riding and more. Spend the day trout fishing at Smithgall Woods or explore the town on a horse drawn carriage.

Sweetwater, TN:
Taking your budding scientist to the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge where they can experience science hands on. Take the history buff to Fort Loudon where they can see a Bristish Fort built in 1756. Take your explorer to the Lost Sea where they can board a glass bottom boat and see some of the largest rainbow trout in the US. Take your sweet tooth to Mayfield Dairy Farms where after a plant tour you will get to sample some of their delicious, made fresh daily ice cream!
